Smartha Vichaaram, was the ritualistic trial of a Nambudiri (Hindu Brahmins in Kerala State) woman and her male mate who were accused of illegitimate sexual relations. If the accused women was found guilty, she and the men involved with her (jaaran) were excommunicated or ostracized (Bhrashtu). The permission of Maharaja was required to conduct smarthavicharam.
